This trail isn't about the summit. It's about the canyon. A narrow limestone gorge carved by a creek that runs year-round. You'll cross the creek six times. Seven if you miss a step and have to backtrack.
The walls are vertical in places. Ferns grow out of cracks. In late spring the water is high and cold — knee-deep on the third crossing. By September it's ankle-deep and you can rock-hop most of it.
The turnaround is a small waterfall in a natural amphitheater. Most groups have lunch here. The sound of the water drowns out conversation, which is the point.
This trail is muddy after rain. Waterproof boots aren't optional — they're required. I've seen too many people in trail runners turn back at crossing three with soaked feet and blisters forming.

“I keep a pair of neoprene socks in my pack just for this trail. Cold wet feet for three hours isn't adventure — it's misery. Good boots fix that.”
