About This Trail

Sunset Ridge is the trail we send people to when they want a real hike without needing mountaineering skills. The first two kilometers follow an old fire road — wide, steady grade, good for warming up. Then the trail cuts into the forest proper. switchbacks. honest switchbacks. None of those fake gentle ones that make you wonder if you're getting anywhere.

The ridge itself is exposed. You'll feel the wind at kilometer 5. That's normal. Push through. The final 400 meters of elevation is on loose scree. Take your time. The view from the top looks straight across three valleys and into the national park boundary. On clear days you can see the snow line.

This trail gets busy on weekends after 10am. Start by 7am and you'll have the summit to yourself.

Your Guide

I've probably hiked this ridge 200 times. The scree section changes after every rain — what was stable last month might shift. I check it weekly.
